DNA Gel Run (2013)

Title installation: DNA Gel Run
Dimensions: 5 x 3 x 5  mm
Exhibition: Discovery Festival Rotterdam
Period: September 27 2013
Location: Educational Center, Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam

The installation magnifies the ongoing physical process of DNA separation during electrophoresis in UV light.  Gel electrophoresis is a method that scientists use to sort, measure the length of, and analyze DNA strands.

The DNA strands are sorted on a gel using an electrical current and analyzed after staining using a UV light. The DNA presented in this work originates from bacteria, human cells (in vitro) and mice (in vivo). The work is done in cooperation with scientists (Niek van Til, Leonie Kaptein and others) from the department of Hematology, Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands
